BC flag

BC flag

This announcement just came out and there are some exciting, quality BC VQA wines being poured at BC Liquor stores in the Vancouver Lower Mainland and Victoria.  Here is the announcement and some of their wines.  Enjoy!

~~~
With the fall harvest in full swing and Thanksgiving just around the corner, October is the perfect month to explore BC VQA wines. British Columbians are celebrating our local bounty and, what better way to honour our crops, than with the annual BC Liquor Stores ‘Best of BC’ release?
Every year, BC Liquor Stores carefully selects a small collection of BC wines which are in limited supply and high demand. In the interest of fairness to all of their customers, the whole selection is released at once, and this year’s release takes place on Saturday, October 12, 2013 in Signature BC Liquor Stores across BC. It’s ‘first-come, first served’, so BC wine fans are encouraged to hurry down and snap up the very best that our province has to offer.
In support of this annual release, the British Columbia Wine Institute has organized an extensive series of in-store wine tastings which will feature a variety of VQA wines from BC. From Vancouver’s West End to West Vancouver, from Victoria to Whistler, 12 different liquor stores will be home to sommelier-led wine tastings where customers can belly-up to the bar while doing their shopping, taste an assortment of BC VQA wines, and learn all about the vinicultural bounty that exists right here in our own backyard.
October brings out the best wines our province has to offer with the ‘Best of BC’ release and province-wide BC VQA in-store wine tastings. Enjoy a glass of your backyard bounty this month!
Enjoy the Sparkling Wines of Blue Mountain Vineyards Tasting
Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars
Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars
Blue Mountain Vineyards in the Okanagan is well-known for their sparkling wines.  If you have not had a chance to enjoy them, the BC Wine Appreciation Society is having a special tasting here in Vancouver on Feb. 12 at the Listel Hotel.  The announcement is below.
~~~

What better way to celebrate a winter evening than with some festive sparkling wine?

Matt Mavety of Blue Mountain Vineyard is coming to see us on Tuesday February 12th, just in time for Valentine’s Day, and he’s bringing four of his celebrated sparkling wines, plus six of his award-winning table wines: two Pinot Gris, two Chardonnay, and two Pinot Noir. We’ll be able to taste one Cream Label and one Reserve Striped Label of each varietal – what a treat!

To make this even more special, we are going to be able to try two amazing vintage sparklers, the 2005 Reserve Brut, and the 2006 Blanc de Blancs. Both are very rare, and we’re very lucky that Blue Mountain is generous enough to let us try them!

Ian and Jane Mavety purchased the 80 acre Blue Mountain property over 40 years ago. Matt Mavety, the current winemaker and son of Ian and Jane, had his first real job in the vineyard at age 14. Loving the work, Matt studied agriculture at UBC, and also studied viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University in New Zealand. Matt started full-time back at Blue Mountain in 1997, and became the official winemaker in 2005.

Matt feels that farming grapes in an environmentally sustainable way leads to the best expression of terroir for the wines. The focus of Matt’s talk will be about what makes Blue Mountain unique, including biodynamic farming, the making of the sparkling wines, cellar aging benefits, their barrel program, and how the wine clones they’ve chosen work with the land they live on. We’re sure this will be fascinating, especially as we get to taste several of the results!

Its Official – The Vancouver Playhouse Wine Festival is On!

Harry Hertscheg speaks to Media.

This afternoon was the official kick off of the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. Our emcee was Mr. Harry Hertscheg, the Playhouse Wine Fest’s manager. He very eloquently introduced we in the media to this year’s event, with Chile as the host country, and Cabernet as our global grape focus.

Range of Red Wines from the Playhouse Wine Festival

At JOEY‘s downtown, we nibbled on a variety of latin-inspired appetizers and sipped a variety of wines from around the world, that will be poured during the Wine Festival.  Two of the wines were from Chile; a Leyda Valley Sauvignon Blanc, and an Errazuriz Carmenere (That’s Chile’s signature red grape by the way!).  I really liked the Sauvignon Blanc.  Leyda Valley is a very cool climate region south of the Casablanca Valley and close to the Chilean coastline.  The Errazuriz Carmenere also is also a nice example of the wine produced by the Carmenere grape.  Soft in the mouth, fruity with capsicum on the nose.

So from now till Sunday there are dinners, seminars, and of course the big International Festival Tasting room.  There are still some tickets available to various events.  Here is the link to tickets for you.

Where can you find me during the wine festival?

  • You’ll Tell Two Friends…: Social Media Symposium
  • Northern Gem, Southern Icon (Concha y Toro winery at Blue Water Cafe)
  • Food & Wine in Balance (Be a food & wine pairing expert)
  • Speaking Frankly about Franc (Learn about Cabernet Franc)

Keep checking into my blog as I will be posting as I attend these events, and sending tweets from my twitter account @mywinepal.

Interested in Going to Chile to try Wine?

I have arranged a 10 day wine and food tour of Chile and Argentina.  The tour will start May 23 and finish on June 1, 2012.  Starting in Santiago we will visit several wineries around Santiago and further south in the premium Colchagua Valley, then cross the Andes and visit several wineries in Mendoza, Argentina, and end up in Buenos Aries, experiencing the city, taking in a tango show, and more.  Here are the details of the wine tour for you.  I am keeping this tour small so that we all get personal attention from the restaurants and wineries we will visit.  Register soon before all the seats have been reserved.

With the fall and winter coming up, our thoughts start moving toward heartier foods and full-bodied red wines.  Coming up on September29 you will get a chance to try some big Malbecs, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and more at the Discover Wines of Argentina tasting here in Vancouver.  If white wines are more your style, you will probably be delighted by Argentina’s signature white grape, Torrontes, or other great white wines, like Chardonnay produced from high-altitude Mendoza or Salta.  Below is the full tasting announcement. Planning Your Summer Wine Trip?

It’s almost mid-August… What do you mean planning your summer wine trip?  Well I didn’t mean a trip here.  How about the southern hemisphere?  January is prime summer time down under.

Vina Errazuriz, Chile winery

If you are in North America, a trip south to Argentina or Chile is not a far stretch.  Vancouver, BC to Santiago, Chile via Air Canada is $1555 round trip in January.  Toronto, Ontario to Buenos Aires, Argentina via Air Canada is $1503 round trip in January, per person.  Both countries speak Spanish, but you can also get along with English as there are English speaking people in hotels as well as at wineries (from personal experience).

Before you get to any of the countries I mention, I recommend researching out some wineries on the Internet, then contacting the wineries in advance to set up a private tasting. I’ve done this in the past and I had great private tastings, which usually includes a few wines that are not normally poured at public tastings.

Southern hemisphere wine selection

If you feel more comfortable being in an English-speaking environment, try Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa.  If you like wines and the environment of British Columbia, then New Zealand may be the destination for you.  A round trip in January from Vancouver to Auckland, New Zealand $2460 via Air Canada per person. If you would like to see the terra rossa soil of the Coonawarra in Australia, and enjoy a big Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, a Vancouver to Sydney, Australia round trip ticket costs around $2123 per person.

The longest flight for Canadians would be to South Africa, but you can experience the Old World wines of the New World.  If you like the structure or finesse of French wines, for example, but also the fruit forwardness of North American wines, South Africa is a good choice. South African wines are designed for food, so make sure you enjoy a braii (a South African bbq) with your South African wines.  A Toronto, Ontario to Capetown, South Africa in January is about $2061 via Air Canada per person.

Some questions you may have for your trip:

  • What wines to enjoy in these southern hemisphere countries?
  • What are the signature grapes of these countries?
  • What are some interesting regions to visit in these countries?

These are all questions that you probably have as you consider your southern hemisphere Summer wine trip.  In upcoming blog articles I will tackle these questions and hopefully help you have a great wine trip!

The flight prices I found on Travelocity.ca.  They can change quickly, so I recommend doing a check on your own. Enjoy your trip planning!
