Each restaurant will be serving up Tasting Bowls or Plates for guests to enjoy and you will have a chance to visit many different types of restaurants throughout the event, meet some new food loving friends, meet the chefs, and learn about each of the participating restaurants.

You may have a chance to taste all sorts of noodles from chow mein to spaghetti to mac & cheese, pho, pad thai, ramen and more. Touring many ethnic eateries and tasting noodle dishes including American, Chinese, Filipino, Hong Kong, Indian, Italian, Korean, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and more.

Visit each of the participating restaurants at your leisure by bike, moped, car, transit, walking, or carpooling.

Vancouver’s Thai Confusion – Great Thai Tapas

Thai Confusion logoThis past week had the official opening of Thai Confusion by owner Thai Keattivanichvily, who also owns Bob Likes Thai Food.  What makes this restaurant different is that Tai is introducing Vancouverites to “Grub Gam” or Thai tapas.  Thai Confuion is located on Pender (117 West Pender) across the corner from Tinseltown, where Wild Rice used to be located.   The restaurant is nicely decorated and has solid wood tables that are not covered up.  I enjoy the look and feel of wood, more than having everything covered up with table cloths.   We were treated to several of their dishes, along with signature cocktails and some of the wines served at the restaurant.

To start off your dinner, try the Lychee Mimosa made with lychee juice and sparkling wine, which I believe is Averill Creek Charm de L’ile.  It is exceptionally tasty.  A few dishes that stood out for me were the:

  • Three Citrus Salad (Yum Som O) – a salad made with pomelo fruit, a relative of the grapefruit, together with tamarind sauce and chili
  • Thom Kha with a Fried Curry Rice Ball – made with a galangal coconut milk base soup, with basil, lemongrass, and lime; while the rice appeared to be a mixture of white and black rice and/or wild rice
  • Thai Poutine – deep fried sliced of taro root topped with lemongrass, Thai basil, lime lead chili and green curry sauce, and also served with a deep fried soft shell crab.
  • Curry Fish in Banana Leaf (Hor Mok Pla) – Marinated then grilled on a banana leaf with coconut milk, turmeric, red curry paste, kaffir lime and relish

The Three Citrus Salad is a wonderfully refreshing way to start or end a meal, with citrus and bitterness from the pomelo, crunch from pomegranite seeds, saltiness and spiciness from the tamarind suace and chili.  Highly recommended.

The Thom Kha with Fried Curry Rice Ball, is like an Italian Arancini gone Thai.  I loved the texture of the rice; both sticky and crunchy, combined with the wonderful, rich coconut milk based soup.  Another dish not to miss.

Thai Poutine.  Who knew?  Well no potatoes here; rather taro root, sliced very thin so that when it is fried, it comes out very crunchy.  I am not sure if the soft shell crab will normally come with this dish, but offers richness to the dish.

Curry Fish in Banana Leaf comes with a small fish, around the size of your hand.  I am not sure the name of the fish, but it is white fleshed, and had no bones, although Tai may have removed the bones ahead of time.  The fish was covered with a paste before grilling. The fish was served on a banana leaf that went into the grill, so you get some smokiness from the banana leaf, together with the flavours from the Thai spices, and the medium texture from the fish.  Another dish you should try.  It is small, so no problem finishing it off.

Besides the Lychee Mimosa another cocktail we were served was the Bourbon of Bangkok made from bourbon, lime and apricot jam with ginger beer.  A nice contrast of ginger spice, citrus, sweet and the darker flavours of bourbon.  You can also taste a selection of 4 white and 2 red wines and 6 different beers.  Check out their website for the list of their beverages.

This would be a nice place to have a quick Thai tapas meal before going to a hockey or football game, or maybe a movie at Tinseltown.  Enjoy.

Celebrating Vancouver Foodster’s Noodle Mania

I think many cultures have a dish made with noodles.  Think of Italian pasta, fried Chinese noodles (thick and thin), Filipino pancit, Indonesian mie goreng, Pad Thai, Vietnamese pho soup, and more.  Vancouver Foodster found a 5 restaurants around Kitsilano, Kerrisdale, and downtown to show off for us their noodle dishes.  All the food was quite enjoyable, but very filling!  Below are the restaurants we visited and the dishes we tasted.  Enjoy!

Our first stop was to pick up our Noodle Mania card from Platform 7 Coffee, a good place to get a cortado and a home made cookie, before going out for a night to eat noodles.

First noodle stop was at Linh Cafe, who presents French and modern Vietnamese cuisine.   There we had Pho Bo, their Beef noodle soup, served with braised beef flank, rice noodles, and scads of scallions.  Usually with pho you get lots of bean sprouts, but no sprouts here.  A nice change.  The star though for me was their Pho Xao; stir fried noodles with fresh herbs, organic oyster mushrooms, and marinated tofu on top of rice noodles.  The brightness of the fresh herbs and earthiness of the mushrooms was delicious.  Recommended.

Stop #2 was Bubble Waffle, who tote themselves as Hong Kong and Taiwanese style cooking, although for me it was more Singaporean in style.  If you like medium spicy I can highly recommend the Laksa soup, made with chicken, coconut milk, rice noodles, Chinese cabbage, and curry spices. There may also have been some cooked egg in it.  Richard do you know?

Next stop was Grotto Italian, serving up squash ravioli and housemade gnocchi on a smoked chicken and mushroom ragout.  I enjoyed the sweetness of the squash in the ravioli, but wished it had a bit more of the sage with brown butter on top.  The gnocchi was also cooked nicely with a slightly crunchy texture du to some pan frying, and went well with the ragout.  They also have a very nice wine list.  We ordered a half litre of their Italian Falanghina (a white Italian grape.  Order it and enjoy.)

Stop 4 brings us to Che-Licious, a Vietnamese restaurant where we had a Zen Salad roll, made with tofu, carrots, cucumber, lettuce, pickled daikon, and red pepper, served with a smoky dipping sauce, and a bowl of beef Pho soup, with rare beef, brisket, beef ball, tripe and tendon.  I didn’t see any of the tripe or tendon in the Pho.  I do LOVE brisket in my pho.  Brisket always is soft and full of flavour.  The tofu in the salad roll was pan fried I believe and you could not tell that it was tofu.  Nice.  The food was presented spectacularly.  You could eat with your eyes and your mouth.

The last stop of the evening was U & I Thai, where they served their U and I Spaghetti Kee Mao, made with wheat spaghetti noodles, and a sauce made with Thai basil, and their Guay Tieow Tom Kha Gai, a chicken soup made with coconut milk, lemon grass and other spices, served with flat rice noodles.  This dish was my FAVOURITE of the night.  It was delicately flavoured and light.  I was told by the restaurant owner that this soup will be showing up on their lunch menu so go try it.

Vancouver Foodsters East Village Tasting Plates – The Review

This week we enjoyed visiting restaurants, cafes, a distillery and a brewery in the East Village area (centered around Hastings & Nanaimo) in Vancouver.  I really enjoyed myself and was quite full by the end.  The portions served by each place I visited was substantial.  I have found a few new places that I would like to visit again.  Below is the menu from each location and a picture or two that I took throughout the night.  Enjoy!

Our Tasting Plate will include all of these 3 items:

  1. Cocktail Salteña (V) – Baked pot-pie, slight spicy and juicy, Beef or Vegetarian, filled with vegetables, potatoes and raisins. < I had the beef option. Full of slow cooked beef flavour.  Has a small amount of sauce inside to make it moist.  The pastry was flaky.  I will buy again.
  2. Quinoa Salad (V) – From the Bolivian Andes, mixed with fresh vegetables
  3. Alfajor (V) – Perfect light sweet cookie sandwich filled with Dulce de Leche and border with coconut < a wonderful, soft neutral flavoured cookie with a layer of dulce de leche through the middle and along the rim and bordered with coconut.  Really tasty and a good match with coffee.
  4. Beef Saltena, Quinoa Salad, and Alfajor cookie

  1. Parsnip soup (V) < a nice earthy root flavour with creaminess from a hint of dairy
  2. Sardines on toast, salad cream, radish and celery salad < Would be nice with a cold beer, or maybe a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris.

Our Tasting Cups will include your choice of a selection of spirits (TBA at location) < We sampled their East Van Vodka and their Creme de Cassis liqueur.  I asked what serving temperature to use for the vodka.  I was told that room temperature is OK, or a slight chill from the fridge.  I picked up some floral notes on the nose and cherry fruit on the palate.  The Creme de Cassis liqueur was sweet, but not cloying and full of cassis flavour.  You can buy both at the distillery.  The vodka costs $36 and the Creme de Cassis costs $22.

Our Tasting Plate will include all of these 3 items:

1) Heritage Pork WHOLE Hog Roast: A unique pork experience from our premium pork supplier North Thompson Heritage Ranch in Barriere B.C. You will receive a portion of 10hr slow charcoal roasted Heritage Pork carved directly off the hog. < nice crispy skin.  The meat was so tender as it was roasted for 10 hours.  Would be great with a beer from Parallel 49 Brewery!

2) Irish Stout Chicken Sausage w/ Caramelized Onion. Made from LOCAL FREE RANGE chicken served with Kosliks Triple Crunch mustard. < lots of flavour in this chicken.

3) Asado NY Striploin kabob; Our house Argentinean Asado marinaded PEI (Free Range) NY Striploin Beef hot off the BBQ. < striploin was very tender and flavourful

  1. Doichaang coffee < This is made from Thai coffee beans.  A first for me.
  2. Cinnamon roll (V) < The cinnamon bun is very good.  Not thick and doughy.
  3. Tom Yum Soup < If you like spice, you will like this soup.  It had nice slices of mushrooms in it and pieces of chicken.

We are fortunate to live in a city which has one of the most exciting culinary scenes in North America, where chefs are passionate about the ingredients that they use, are committed to pushing boundaries and are creating dishes to excite the diners palate. I have created this Signature Dishes Festival to put the spotlight on these creative chefs and their restaurants who support their creativity and passion; said Richard Wolak, this festival is also a challenge featuring 15 participating Chefs and their Restaurants in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and Langley where diners are invited to vote for their favourite dishes, this festival runs from September 6-30, 2013.

How people can Vote for their favourite Signature Dish Creations?

Once people have ordered and tried the Signature Dish Creations at the participating restaurants, they can vote on their mobile phones or ipads from their table in the restaurants or later in the day. People can cast their vote once a day, so if they are visiting the other participating restaurants daily or during the festival they can vote for their other favourites as well.

Vancouver Foodster Tasting Plates 2nd annual Downtown EditionHow fast one year goes by and we are into the next year.  Vancouver Foodster is having his 2nd Annual Tasting Plates – Downtown Edition on February 20, 2013. I attended the Inaugural Tasting Plates downtown and had fun walking and talking with my friend.  This is an event you want to share with friend or significant other.  This year Vancouver Foodster has also added a music component, so you can eat with your ears and your eyes, but don’t listen too much, you don’t want to be too full for other courses 🙂

Vancouver, BC – Prepare to experience some of the newest and tastiest offerings on Wednesday, February 20 from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm as Vancouver Foodster, Vancouver’s essential online food and drink guide, presents the 2nd annual“Tasting Plates Vancouver” Downtown Edition .

Live music has been added this year and will be featured at the Vancouver Fanclub (which is also our registration spot) starting at 5:30pm.

Participating restaurants will offer tasting plates of their food to the guests, thereby showcasing their restaurant and promoting their food and chefs.

The event is a roving tour that brings guests to the participating restaurants, cafes & food trucks, throughout the evening and they will by moped, bike, driving, transit, walking, roller skates, skateboarding or carpooling. around downtown including Coal Harbour and the West End.

Noodle dishes are popular around the world.  There are many variations on the sauce (e.g. hot, sour, spicy,tomato-based), the type of noodle (e.g. wheat or rice), and the protein with it (e.g. fish, meat, tofu).  With all these variables there are probably several thousands of variations, and proabably a few that you prefer. Vancouver, BC – Prepare to experience some of the newest and tastiest offerings on Sunday, January 13 from 3 to 8 p.m. as Vancouver Foodster, Vancouver’s essential online food and drink guide, presents “Noodle Mania Vancouver”.

Tantalize your taste buds at several restaurants throughout Vancouver! This tasting extravaganza goes from 3pm until 8pm and is presented by Vancouver Foodster. Guests will taste all types of noodles from chow mein to spaghetti to ramen, udon, pad thai and more. Touring many ethnic eateries and tasting noodle dishes from American, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Malaysian, Singaporean, Thai, Vietnamese, and more.

Each restaurant will be serving up Tasting Bowls or Plates for guests to enjoy and they will have a chance to visit many different types of restaurants throughout the event, meet some new food loving friends, meet the chefs, and learn about each of the participating restaurants.

The event is a roving tour that brings guests to the participating restaurant throughout the event and they will by moped, bike, driving, transit, walking, roller skates, skateboarding or carpooling to the various participating restaurants.

Chau Veggie Express at 5052 Victoria Drive specializes in Asian veggie noodle dishes and they will be participating along with Urban Thai Bistro at 1119 Hamilton Street who specializes in Thai noodle dishes! These are just a couple in the line-up of participating restaurants that will be revealed soon.
