Alsace is a wonderful region in northeastern France.  The confluence of German and French wine and cuisine.  Beautiful gingerbread-style houses.  I’ve been there once and would love to go again.  But in case you are like me, longing to visit, or have yet to visit, you can experience the cuisine of Alsace at Bistro Pastis till the end of June.  Here is their special menu for me and you.

When Stefanie and Bernd Schales decided to call their winery “8th Generation” they really meant it. Their families have been making wine in Germany since 1783 – that’s a lot of history!

Stefanie studied architecture while Bernd followed the family tradition by becoming a winemaker. He studied at the State Academy for Viticulture & Oenologie of Weinsberg in Germany, and went on to make wine in Germany, New Zealand and South Africa.

After immigrating to Canada from Germany, Stefanie and Bernd purchased their first vineyard, in OK Falls, in 2003. In 2007, they bought the winery in Summerland. Our BCWAS September bus tour has been there twice, and each time the stop was one of our highlights!

8th Generation makes Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Meunier Rosé, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah as well as two frizzante-style bubblies and their flagship Riesling.

Directions:

Transit:  It’s a short walk from both Burrard and Waterfront Stations.

From Burrard Station: walk down (north) on Burrard to the new Convention Centre.

From Waterfront Station: walk west to the new Convention Centre.

You can either walk west along Waterfront Rd to the Olympic Torch, then go across the plaza towards the water and down the stairs, or, follow the seawall along in front of the Convention Centre until you come to the restaurant.

Driving: You can park under the Convention Centre West. Follow the signs for the seaplane terminal. Use the doors closest to the Tap & Barrel. Parking can be expensive, though. You may be able to find cheaper parking a few blocks away.

Abbotsford Harvest Dinner – Wine, Beer, Main Dishes and Dessert

Circle Farm TourMany of us aspire to the 100 mile diet.  Keeping our food local.  Supporting our farmers.  But here in Vancouver, have you considered that those farmers, might be a 30-45 minute drive away in Abbotsford, in the Fraser Valley?  I was invited as part of the Circle Farm Tour to experience an Abbotsford Harvest Dinner, and was pleasantly surprised by the bounty of food, wine and beer that is available.

The dinner starting with chatting and sampling local beer from Ravens Brewing Company.  This brewery just opened earlier this year and collaborates with local growers and suppliers to craft artisan beer.  I tried their English Dark Mild.  It was indeed dark, with a charcoal and dark malt flavour to it, but not too heavy, so that you can enjoy more food and wine.

The dishes we enjoyed were:

  • Campbell’s Gold honey roasted, local delicata squash with pumpkin seeds, Abbotsford goat cheese from Mt. Lehman Cheese (appetizer)
  • Maple Hills Farm’s chicken roulade with creamy polenta and kale chips (appetizer)
  • Lepp Farm Market’s pork loin wrapped in bacon with savory shallot and plum marmalade (entree)
  • Yarrow Meadows’ duck breast with balsamic pearl onions (entree)
  • Roasted local beets and parsnips (entree)
  • Organic Fraser Valley rice risotto with roasted shiitake mushrooms (entree)
  • Birchwood Dairy’s vanilla ice cream topped with Gojoy Berries’ goji berry compote (dessert)
  • Onnink’s chocolate blueberry bonbons (dessert)

I must say that it was nice to meet, or have the farmers from Abbotsford introduce themselves to us as we sat at a beautifully set table in the barrel room of Mt. Lehman Winery.  Thanks also to Chef Jeff Massey from Restaurant 62 who prepared all these dishes for us.

The farmers supplying our food and drink are:

The dishes come from fresh ingredients from the vegetables, to the pork, chicken and duck.  A few standout dishes for me were first the honey roasted local delicata squash with pumpkin seeds and goat cheese.  Creamy sweetness from the squash, with creaminess from the cheese and a bit of crunch from the pumpkin seeds.  The Lepp Farm Market’s pork loin wrapped in bacon was also outstanding for me.  The bacon comes from Lepp, and is smoked by them.  No artificially aged bacon here.  The flavour of the bacon was really outstanding and makes you think about the industrial bacon you buy in grocery stores.  No comparison.  If you have never tried roasted beets, give them a try.  I really like the earthiness of the beets.  And the blueberry bonbons are also a very tasty way to end dessert.  Good quality chocolate mixed with blueberries.  You cannot go wrong with this combination.  All the dishes were very good, and I present to you pictures of these dishes for your visual consumption below.  If any of this food or wine sparks your interest, drive out to Abbotsford and buy from these farmers.

I must especially thank winery owner Vern Siemens for opening bottles of every white and red wine I think they make, for us to experiment and pair with all the dishes at our Abbotsford Harvest dinner.  I in particular liked Mt. Lehman’s Pinot Noir and Unoaked Chardonnay, and felt they made good pairings with many dishes.

Free Event – Enjoy when German Wines meet Asian Cuisine May 9

Vancouver, BC – German wines will share the spotlight with Asian foods in BC Liquor Stores throughout the month of May, 2015. 60 stores will feature lively displays of a select 12 German wines, including a sparkling Riesling and a Dornfelder Pinot Noir. Customers can pick up their complimentary recipe booklet at all participating stores and a FREE consumer event will kick-off the promotion featuring the Asian foods of Vancouver’s own Stephen Wong – wine writer and chef extraordinaire.

The promotion showcases a wide assortment of Germans wines, giving consumers an opportunity to learn about the diversity of the German wine offering and how well they pair with Asian cuisines. A brochure has been developed which will be on display in all 60 participating stores, offering food pairing suggestions for the participating wines, along with four excellent Asian recipes; Pakoras, California Sushi Roll, Seafood Laksa and Szechuan Pork.

At the consumer event on Saturday, May 9, 2015, consumers can try samples, at no charge, of all 12 featured German wines paired with gourmet Chinese foods, hand-crafted by Chef (and acclaimed wine writer) Stephen Wong. Accredited Sommeliers will present the wines on rotation throughout the event, paired with the following Asian Appetizers:

German wines are generally heralded as great food friendly wines. This is a very bold statement, but most sommeliers and other food and wine professionals will agree. British Columbia, being the multi-ethnic province that it is, hosts a wide array of cuisines that virtually reach out for German wines. The not-really secret here is the variety in styles (dry to sweet, sparkling or still), grape varieties (Riesling and Pinot Noir, to name the top ones of either white or red) and the distinct levels of richness (light to full, to honey-like) plus, based on the cooler climate, the wines generally have a good amount of acidity (considered vital for a great food wine) and lower levels of alcohol than warmer climate peers.

About Ryan Carr

Ryan Carr is the owner and winemaker and grower for Carr Vineyards & Winery. Growing up in Southern California, Ryan always had an interest in farming, but never expected he would end up in the wine industry. After graduating from the University of Arizona with an Art degree, Ryan moved to Santa Ynez Valley in California where he discovered the wine industry. With just a taste of some of the local wines he decided to pursue a career in viticulture. He began working in the fields pruning wines with one of the local vineyard management companies.
Once the harvest of 1998 arrived, Ryan had the opportunity to work at Central Coast Wine Services in Santa Maria where he got the chance to make wine with several different wineries. After learning the basics of making wine and working with so many great winemakers, Ryan decided he wanted to produce his first vintage. In 1999 Ryan made a Cabernet Sauvignon in his garage from grapes he helped to grow at a vineyard down the road. The vintage was whopping 10 cases and was given away to friends and family. To his surprise people loved the wine. After making such a great wine from grapes he had grown, Ryan felt that this was the only way it should be done. With this belief in mind, Ryan and his friend Andy Kahn (winemaker for the Kahn Winery) started a vineyard development company. With this partnership not only would Ryan be able to grow grapes, but he also became the assistant winemaker for the Kahn Winery. In trade for Ryan’s time in the winery he was given the opportunity to make his first commercial vintage. Over the years, Ryan honed his winemaking and grape growing skills. By 2004 the Carr Winery was making just over 1000 cases and had become nationally recognized.
By 2006 Ryan had helped build three wineries and planted over 200 acres of grapes in Santa Barbara County. Now he was finally working on a winery of his own. In the spring of 2007 Carr Winery opened its doors in Downtown Santa Barbara. The winery was one of only four full production wineries and tasting rooms in the downtown area. Since then the wines and the facility have received many accolades and awards and Ryan has continued to produce some of the finest wines in Santa Barbara County.

South Africa flagKirkland, Washington — On Sunday, September 21st, Le Grand Bistro Americain proprietor Ted Furst and Executive Chef Shawn Martin will be hosting a special 5-course dinner featuring 7 wines from South Africa, where wine has a history dating back more than 350 years – possibly the oldest wine tradition in the New World.  Joining them will be winemakers Paul Cluver of Cluver Wines, Angela Jordaan of Jardin Wine Estates, and Kathy Jordan of Radford Dale, to share stories about their “wine farms” and the status of winemaking in South Africa today.  The event starts at 6:00pm with a reception in the South Dining Room, followed by dinner at 6:30pm.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase wines from the dinner at special reduced prices.

The South African wine culture has grown parallel to the country’s social development.  While they are 7th in the world’s wine production, their output did not have a presence in the USA until the 1990’s after apartheid ended, due to product boycotts.

Paul Cluver is a family-owned, family-run wine business, located in the cool-climate Elgin Valley, approximately 70km south-east of Cape Town. The property has been in ownership of the Cluver family since 1896. Recognized as pioneers of wine in the area, the focus is on producing elegant wines that are expressive of the terroir.

Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993 on a farm with a 300 year-old history. Vancouver, BC – German wines will share the spotlight with Asian foods in BC Liquor Stores from May 6 to June 2, 2014. 60 stores will feature lively displays of a select 12 German wines, all pairing perfectly with the myriad flavours of Asian cuisines. A FREE consumer event will kick-off the promotion, doling out delectable dim sum with Deutsches wien.

What could be more delicious than a crisp, refreshing German Riesling to balance with traditional Chinese Dim Sum flavours? This is what Wines of Germany had in mind when they announced their sponsorship of a month-long thematic within 60 BC Liquor Stores throughout the month of May. German wine Portfolio Manager Barbara Philip selected the 12 wines that will participate in the promotion and local sommelier Mireille Sauvé developed, in conjunction with Wines of Germany, a detailed brochure which will be distributed free of charge at all participating locations. The brochure offers professional tasting notes to guide consumers to their preferred wine style, as well as detailed food pairing suggestions which showcase exclusively the cuisines of Asian regions.

At the consumer event on Saturday, May 10, 2014, consumers can try samples, at no charge, of all 12 featured German wines paired with authentic Chinese dim sum from Vancouver’s Chinatown eatery, Floata Seafood Restaurant. Steamer baskets will be stacked high, filled with Ha gow and sui mai, which visitors can try with all 12 featured wines, presented by accredited Sommeliers on rotation throughout the event. Wines of Germany are generally heralded as great food friendly wines. This is a very bold statement, but most sommeliers and other food and wine professionals will agree. British Columbia, being the multi-ethnic province that it is, hosts a wide array of cuisines that virtually reach out for German wines. The not-really secret here is the variety in styles (dry to sweet, sparkling or still), grape varieties (Riesling and Pinot Noir, to name the top ones of either white or red) and the distinct levels of richness (light to full, to honey-like) plus, based on the cooler climate, the wines generally have a good amount of acidity (considered vital for a great food wine) and lower levels of alcohol than warmer climate peers.

This is always a fun event.  California brings us big ripe fruit flavours, both for red and white wines.  For those of you who keep thinking about heavy oak, that is a thing of the past.  Many California wine makers use oak more delicately, or have unoaked versions of their wine.  You may be thinking Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, which are the stars for California, but California Pinot Noir is quite nice too.  And if you want a fun, jammy red wine, try a Zinfandel.  Below is the info for the upcoming Art’s Club California Wine Fair.  Get your tickets before it sells out!

Vancouver, B.C.—The Arts Club’s California Wine Fair returns this spring with two distinct events for wine devotees: the large-scale California Wine Fair Ballroom Tasting and the intimate California Winemakers Dinner. These social and informative evenings are designed for guests to explore the abundant range of styles and varietals created across the Golden State by its prolific vintners. The fair is one of the company’s signature fundraisers, with proceeds benefitting the Arts Club’s community-based programs and youth education initiatives.

This year’s tasting marks the 34th presentation in Vancouver of the cross-Canadian tour, organized by California Wines. Highly knowledgeable wine producers from 115 wineries will pour over 400 wines to demonstrate the depth of diversity in the region. Wine enthusiasts of all stripes can sample the best California wines, including labels not currently available in B.C., and connect with vintners for advice on selecting, serving, and storing wine. The evening also includes an extensive silent auction featuring luxury travel, entertainment and cultural packages, and exclusive wine lots.

West Restaurant will host the California Winemakers Dinner, which brings together the award-winning duo of Executive Chef Quang Dang and Restaurant/Wine Director Owen Knowlton. They will showcase pristine regional ingredients in an exquisite multi-course menu of contemporary cuisine. Premium wine pairings include vintages from Edna Valley Vineyard, Ghost Pines Vineyard, Louis M. Martini Winery, and MacMurray Ranch that represent the Central Coast, Napa Valley, and Sonoma wine regions. Wine producers will dine with guests and talk about the culture of winemaking and share insights on new trends and technological advances.
