Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars

Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars

This year, 2014, Vancouver International Wine Festival’s “global focus” is Bubbly.   While there will of course be Champagne from France, Cava from Spain, and Prosecco from Italy, don’t forget about BC!  Here is some info sent to me, that I’m passing along to you about what/where to enjoy Blue Mountain’s wines.

~~~
Make sure you don’t miss BC’s iconic sparkling wine producer, Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars.
Winemaker Matt Mavety will be behind the table at the Festival tasting room, showcasing their signature sparkling and still wines:
  • Brut “Gold Label” NV
  • Brut Rosé 2009
  • Chardonnay 2012
  • Pinot Noir 2012
Matt will also be showcasing his wines at the following events:
  • All About Bubbly!
  • 25 Under $25.
About Blue Mountain Vineyard & Cellars
Founded in 1971, Blue Mountain can make the rare claim of 42 years of continuous grape production by one family. Today, on their 32-hectare estate, they make limited quantities of complex wines from noble varietals including Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay — the same varietals found in the Champagne, Burgundy and Alsace regions of France. In the vineyard, methods favor low crop yields to concentrate and intensify flavours. While using modern equipment in the winery, wine making is respectful of traditional methods.
About Matt Mavety
Matt’s first serious work in the vineyard started at age 14 as a part-time job while in high school.
Hooked by the field, so to speak, Matt followed his father’s course, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of British Columbia. He majored in Agricultural Economics. Matt had the good fortune to study viticulture and oenology on a student exchange at Lincoln University in Christchurch, New Zealand. Upon graduation from university in 1997, he started working full-time with Blue Mountain.
A favored aspect of Matt’s work is the time spent in the vineyards, but he says it wouldn’t have as much meaning if it wasn’t part of “the complete package” – the full process of turning fruit to wine and capturing the season in its qualities. When he tastes a vintage, the memory of the particular season is recalled.
Enjoy the Sparkling Wines of Blue Mountain Vineyards Tasting
Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars
Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars
Blue Mountain Vineyards in the Okanagan is well-known for their sparkling wines.  If you have not had a chance to enjoy them, the BC Wine Appreciation Society is having a special tasting here in Vancouver on Feb. 12 at the Listel Hotel.  The announcement is below.
~~~

What better way to celebrate a winter evening than with some festive sparkling wine?

Matt Mavety of Blue Mountain Vineyard is coming to see us on Tuesday February 12th, just in time for Valentine’s Day, and he’s bringing four of his celebrated sparkling wines, plus six of his award-winning table wines: two Pinot Gris, two Chardonnay, and two Pinot Noir. We’ll be able to taste one Cream Label and one Reserve Striped Label of each varietal – what a treat!

To make this even more special, we are going to be able to try two amazing vintage sparklers, the 2005 Reserve Brut, and the 2006 Blanc de Blancs. Both are very rare, and we’re very lucky that Blue Mountain is generous enough to let us try them!

Ian and Jane Mavety purchased the 80 acre Blue Mountain property over 40 years ago. Matt Mavety, the current winemaker and son of Ian and Jane, had his first real job in the vineyard at age 14. Loving the work, Matt studied agriculture at UBC, and also studied viticulture and oenology at Lincoln University in New Zealand. Matt started full-time back at Blue Mountain in 1997, and became the official winemaker in 2005.

Matt feels that farming grapes in an environmentally sustainable way leads to the best expression of terroir for the wines. The focus of Matt’s talk will be about what makes Blue Mountain unique, including biodynamic farming, the making of the sparkling wines, cellar aging benefits, their barrel program, and how the wine clones they’ve chosen work with the land they live on. We’re sure this will be fascinating, especially as we get to taste several of the results!

 About Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars

Located in BC’s South Okanagan, Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars is distinctive among Canadian wineries in that all its wines are produced exclusively from grapes grown on the estate’s vineyards.  Ian Mavety purchased the land which is now Blue Mountain Vineyard in 1971.  Current owners Ian, Jane, Matt, and Christie Mavety continue to work to realize the potential of the region, utilizing sustainable farming methods and winemaking practices.  Blue Mountain produces complex, age-worthy varietal wines that are consistent in style while allowing the expression of both the terroir and the individual growing season.

Bubbles for New Years eve 2010

We are on the precipice between the 2000’s and the 2010’s New Years. Shouldn’t we be celebrating the end of the first 10 years of 2000 with some Champagne or other sparkling wine? What fun things could you try? How about buying a vintage champagne, or other sparkling wine from the year 2000. It might be difficult and cost a bit more money but it would be memorable.

If you don’t have the time or money to hunt down one of the 2000 vintage bubbles, I have a few suggestions. The wines I list below, I’ve tasted and have tasting notes on http://www.MyWinePal.com under the Wine Reviews tab. The reviews are stored in a spreadsheet format which you can freely download and use to help you select bubbles and other wines. Please download and make use of my notes.

Some sparkling wines I enjoyed:

New Zealand Lindauer Brut Sparkling NV Biscuity and citrus aroma and flavours. The bubble was small and elegant.
Australia Banrock Station Sparkling Chardonnay NV Pale straw colour. It has pleasant acidity. There are flavours of peach, lime and melon.
Australia Skillogalee Sparkling Riesling NV Petrol and citrus nose. Good acidity, bright citrus flavour with lingering petrol. Medium length.
South Africa Graham Beck Sparkling -Brut Pinot Noir /
Chardonnay
NV Brillant golden colour and had honey, apple, biscuity aromas and flavours.
Italy Cantina Breganze Prosecco Extra Dry Prosecco NV Pale lemon in colour with a
tinge of green. Lemon and juicy orchard fruit on the nose. Orange, lemon, and rose petal flavours.
Italy Cantina Breganze Blanquette de Limoux
Demi-Sec
NV This is a semi-sweet, organic
sparkling wine. This one has a nice white flower nose. Bright lemony colour. Flowery, light spice, and orangy flavours. Nice.
Spain Codorniu Sparkling Brut Pinot Noir NV Light orangy pink in colour.
Light strawberry aroma. Very bracing in your mouth, with strawberry and raspberry flavours.
Hungary Hungaria Grand Cuvee NV Quite a deal for this sparkler.
Light lemon in colour, with lemon/lime aromas. Light bubble with lemon flavour.
France Cuillier Pere et Fils Brut Selection Pinot Noir / Chardonnay NV Fine bubble with green apple
and pear aromas. Fine bubble with lemon and pear flavour. This wine was like enjoying a fresh pear. Very tasty!
South Africa Moreson Blanc de Blancs Brut Method
Cap Classic
Chardonnay NV It had a very fine bubble. Red
apple, citrus, light spice and bready flavour. It had a long finish. Nice.

If you are in the Vancouver, BC area, you should be able to get these wines (but not necessarily some of the exact vintages) at a BC Specialty liquor store, or some private wine stores like Everything Wine.

You may also want to celebrate the coming of 2010 with a BC sparkling wine. Here is a list of some sparkling BC wines from Everything Wine (you may be able to get these at BC liquor stores too):

Blue Mountain Gold Label Sparkling 750 mL Sparkling $29.99
Charles Meunier Sparkling 750ml Sparkling $13.99
Gray Monk Odyssey Brut Sparkling 750 mL Sparkling $26.99
Starling Lane ‘Celebration’ Brut 750 ml Sparkling $30.99

I hope I’ve given you a few ideas for a sparkling wine for New Year’s Eve. FYI, I’ll probably be enjoying a bottle of Summerhill Cipes Brut N/V from the Okanagan. Cheers!
