Belated Celebration of Vancouver Foodster’s Tasting Plates 5th Anniversary

It was Vancouver Foodster‘s 5th Tasting Plate Anniversary on March 8, and Richard went all out to impress us with the participating downtown venues.  We started off with a sip of red and white Chilean wine at Marquis Wine Cellars.   A celebratory drink for a celebratory occasion.

Our Tasting Plates crawl took us to visit:

By the time I visited all the venues, I was thoroughly, pleasantly stuffed.

What did I get to Sample?

Marquis Wine Cellars

  • Terrapura 2015 Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($20.78 + tax) – A full bodied round, ripe, soft dark-fruited wine.
  • Terrapura 2014 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc ($19.04 + tax) – Exhibiting lots of New World tropical and herbal character.

Both wines are reasonably priced at Marquis, and easy to enjoy.

Ten Ten Tapas

  • Octopus Conserva,
  • Mushrooms on Toast and
  • Salmon Mi Cuit

Ten Ten Tapas is a bit hidden at the base of the Burrard bridge along Beach Avenue, but should not be missed.  They created some very nice tapas for us to enjoy.  In particular, I really liked the Salmon with the dill, as those tastes always go well together.  The octopus was also quite nicely; not over-done which made it soft to chew.

Meinhardt Fine Foods

  • Roasted Cauliflower & Chickpea Salad- tahini, lemon, parsley, red onion
  • Mushroom Leek Soup- crispy leeks, cream, truffle oil
  • Prosciutto & Brie “Sandwich”- fig crostini, arugula, aioli
  • Zesty Lemon Bar- pate sucree base, fresh raspberries
  • Superfood SweetHARDT- vegan, paleo, chocolate heart

This was my last stop, and I was already stuffed from Patron Tacos & Cantina.  But nevertheless, devoured these tasty tasting plate dishes.  The food was all very healthy.  I really enjoyed the roasted cauliflower and chickpea salad.  Roasted cauliflower has such nice flavour combined with the texture from the chickpea.

Patron Tacos & Cantina

  • Sopecito – Handmade thick corn tortilla, topped with beans & shredded chicken. Garnished with green tomatillo sauce
lettuce, feta cheese, sour cream and Pico de Gallo.
  • Flautita – Deep fried corn tortilla filled with our delicious “BARBACOA”. Topped with green tomatillo sauce, sour cream and feta cheese.
  • Enchilada – Corn tortilla with shredded beef. Topped with red sauce. Garnished with sour cream and feta cheese

This was probably my favourite stop during the Tasting Plates event.  I know good Mexican food, having travelled extensively in the Southwestern USA very often.  The food at Patron would measure up to any food that I have eaten in Phoenix, Tucson, or El Paso.  All freshly made sauces.  Not made too spicy so the gringos here in Vancouver can enjoy, but they do provide you with a variety of hot sauces to add the heat if needed.

Saj & Co.

Flowers (Breadbowl hummus salad with different flavours and different breads!)

Eating here I felt very healthy. The salad bowl was edible. Again more chickpeas; this time made into hummus.  Really fresh Middle-eastern food.  This place is very tiny so if you are going to go during the day for your lunch break at work, I’d suggest going before the noon-time rush.  The small, round chocolate cakes were also very good.  Not sweet.

Apple Pie Three Ways:

  • Salted Caramel Apple
  • Dutch Apple
  • Blackberry Apple

If you like pies, then give Tartine a try.  I am partial to apple pies, so my favourite was the salted caramel apple pie, but all the pies were done very well.  I didn’t have time to enjoy them with a cup of coffee, but maybe on my next trip there on my own I will.

Port Moody Tasting Plates – What To Try

Vancouver Foodster took us to a brand new part of the lower mainland for his latest Tasting Plates experience, Port Moody.  Located to the northeast of Burnaby, the restaurants and breweries wanted to show us what they have to offer.  There are several breweries in Port Moody, and during this event we sampled craft beers from two of them; Moody Ales and The Parkside Brewery.  There was also sweet and savoury at the Tasting Plates.  Enjoy the pictures that I took during the event, along with my brief commentary.

My Port Moody Tasting Plates Notes

Starting off with savoury, we visited Spacca Napoli Pizeria and Meat Craft Urban Butchery.  Spacca was very busy, and from discussions, seems to be busy all the time.  They offered us a meatball, frittelle (a fried fritter that had pieces of seaweed inside), Rigatoni Bolognese, and a slice of Neapolitan style pizza.  I really enjoyed the flavour of the tender meatball along with the tomato sauce.  The slice of pizza was also good, but could have been served hotter.

Spacca Napoli pizza, pasta, and meatballs

Spacca Napoli pizza, pasta, and meatballs

Meat Craft Urban Butchery offered us a choice of a mini-smokie in a bun topped with slaw, and a side of potato salad.  Although the specialize in meat, their slaw and potato salad were excellent.  One smokie was garlic flavoured, and the other two had beer from either Yellow Dog or Moody Ales.  I tried the Moody Ales flavoured smokie.  It was grilled lightly.  You could get the flavour of the ale without it being over-powering.  A place to visit to buy more smokies, kebabs or other meats for the future.

Meat Craft Urban Butchery with grilled sausages, slaw, and potato salad

Meat Craft Urban Butchery with grilled sausages, slaw, and potato salad

With some food in me, the next stops were to Moody Ales and The Parkside Brewery.  Both offered us 4 beers to taste.  My preference was for the darker, brown ales, while my friend preferred the lighter lagers.  Between the two breweries, and the others just down the street, there is something for everyone to enjoy.  I have also been told that on weekends you can find food trucks beside the breweries, so grab a bite and a brew!

After our fill of savoury food and beer, it was time for dessert.  First stop was Rocky Point Ice Cream, a well-loved establishment in Port Moody, and the new Gabi & Jules pie shop.  Rocky Point Ice Cream made 3 special treats for us:  a mini Sweet Georgia Brown sundae, a strawberry ice cream with basil and balsamic reduction in a chocolate cup, and a mini ginger-molasses and pumpkin spice ice cream sandwich.  All were very tasty.  I enjoyed the sundae and the chocolate cup the most.  The sandwich cookie was a little too hard, and would have been spectacular if it was a bit softer.  The basil and balsamic reduction showed flair and really worked with the strawberry ice cream.  I highly recommend this place for ice cream.

Gabi & Jules rounded out the evening with a slice of pie; mine being apple and blackberry.  Apple pie is in general my favourite type of pie.  The blackberries, scattered throughout, added a floral note to the pie.  It was not overly sweet, and the crust was very flaky.  Enjoyed this with a cup of decaf coffee.

Thanks to all the restaurants and breweries for letting us sample from them, and for Vancouver Foodster for branching out of the well-known foodie areas of Vancouver.

Style of Pizza: New York style

The “New York Pizza” dates back to 1905 when Gennaro Lombardi, an immigrant pizzaiolo from Naples, began to serve pizza in his Little Italy grocery store. Lombardi created a unique pizza style similar to that from the old country. He still focused on a thin crust and high quality ingredients, but his pizzas were served ‘to go’ and ‘by the slice’. His influence led to the emergence of Italian American Pizzaiolos who began to make quality slices all over the immigrant neighbourhoods in Brooklyn.  To this day, Brooklyn is renowned for having New York’s best pizza. Our aim is to bring a little New York to Vancouver by giving you an experience that is straight outta Brooklyn…
