 Road 13 Vineyards saw another busy summer season of wine-loving tourists and locals through their Golden Mile Bench tasting room. With a number of wines in the portfolio currently sold out and a bounty of awards at the British Columbia Wine Awards and Wine Align National Wine Awards – it’s safe to say the Oliver based vineyard has had a successful few months.

These awards come hot on the heels of  Wine Align’s National Wine Awards of Canada 2017 which awarded Road 13 Vineyards as the Best Winery in BC and #4 in Canada – Road 13 has been named Top 10 Winery nine years in a row. Thirteen medals were awarded in the categories of Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Notes from the Harvest:

The vintage started out cool and wet, but quickly changed to hot and dry. These conditions produced tiny berries which result in concentrated fruit flavours and a low yield. The smoke from the forest fires this past summer helped to keep temperatures below 35 degrees Celsius allowing the vines to keep ripening grapes, rather than shutting down to conserve energy. The quality of the grapes coming in from the harvest has been excellent and it is looking like another great vintage.

Join Road 13 during the Oliver – Osoyoos Tourism Association’s Winter in Wine Country Festival. Events include the annual Oliver community light up and fireworks, plus festival of trees. Class in a Glass: paint pARTy – Saturday, November 25 | 1pm to 4pm

Road 13 Vineyards Wine Paring Recipe from Ned Bell’s Lure Cookbook 

With the busy holiday season around the corner – Ned Bell’s roasted scallop recipe from his recently launched Lure Cookbook wows guests and is a party favourite every time. Pair with the award-winning Road 13 Vineyards 2016 Honest John’s White. Aromas of green apple, pears and lime whisks you away from winter outside to a tropical locale – if only for a bite or two. Try it at home.
Roasted Scallops with Grapefruit, Brown Butter and Thyme
Ingredients:
6 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tsp chopped fresh thyme or rosemary
1 grapefruit
12 Weathervane scallops
sea salt and pepper
1 bunch watercress, stems removed
Method:
Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Add thyme. Allow butter to gently simmer for 5 minutes or until milk solids turn golden brown and fall to the bottom of the pan. Meanwhile, cut and peel the grapefruit. Working over a bowl, cut between the membranes to remove the segments and let them fall into the bowl. Squeeze the membranes over the bowl to extract all the juice before discarding.
If the abductor muscle (a little flap) is still on the side of the scallops, remove it. Heat skillet over medium-high heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Add 2 tbsp of the brown butter. Pat the scallops dry and add to the pan, making sure not to crowd them. Allow to sear undisturbed for 2 minutes or until browned. Season with salt and pepper, flip the scallops and add remaining brown butter. Add 2 tbsp of grapefruit juice. Allow scallops to sear for an additional 2 minutes, basting them with liquid in the pan.
Serve:
Divide the watercress among four plates. Set the scallops on top and garnish with grapefruit segments. Drizzle with the pan sauce and sprinkle with sea salt.

Abbotsford Harvest Dinner setting at Mt Lehman Winery

Abbotsford Harvest Dinner – Wine, Beer, Main Dishes and Dessert

Circle Farm TourMany of us aspire to the 100 mile diet.  Keeping our food local.  Supporting our farmers.  But here in Vancouver, have you considered that those farmers, might be a 30-45 minute drive away in Abbotsford, in the Fraser Valley?  I was invited as part of the Circle Farm Tour to experience an Abbotsford Harvest Dinner, and was pleasantly surprised by the bounty of food, wine and beer that is available.

The dinner starting with chatting and sampling local beer from Ravens Brewing Company.  This brewery just opened earlier this year and collaborates with local growers and suppliers to craft artisan beer.  I tried their English Dark Mild.  It was indeed dark, with a charcoal and dark malt flavour to it, but not too heavy, so that you can enjoy more food and wine.

The dishes we enjoyed were:

  • Campbell’s Gold honey roasted, local delicata squash with pumpkin seeds, Abbotsford goat cheese from Mt. Lehman Cheese (appetizer)
  • Maple Hills Farm’s chicken roulade with creamy polenta and kale chips (appetizer)
  • Lepp Farm Market’s pork loin wrapped in bacon with savory shallot and plum marmalade (entree)
  • Yarrow Meadows’ duck breast with balsamic pearl onions (entree)
  • Roasted local beets and parsnips (entree)
  • Organic Fraser Valley rice risotto with roasted shiitake mushrooms (entree)
  • Birchwood Dairy’s vanilla ice cream topped with Gojoy Berries’ goji berry compote (dessert)
  • Onnink’s chocolate blueberry bonbons (dessert)

I must say that it was nice to meet, or have the farmers from Abbotsford introduce themselves to us as we sat at a beautifully set table in the barrel room of Mt. Lehman Winery.  Thanks also to Chef Jeff Massey from Restaurant 62 who prepared all these dishes for us.

The farmers supplying our food and drink are:

The dishes come from fresh ingredients from the vegetables, to the pork, chicken and duck.  A few standout dishes for me were first the honey roasted local delicata squash with pumpkin seeds and goat cheese.  Creamy sweetness from the squash, with creaminess from the cheese and a bit of crunch from the pumpkin seeds.  The Lepp Farm Market’s pork loin wrapped in bacon was also outstanding for me.  The bacon comes from Lepp, and is smoked by them.  No artificially aged bacon here.  The flavour of the bacon was really outstanding and makes you think about the industrial bacon you buy in grocery stores.  No comparison.  If you have never tried roasted beets, give them a try.  I really like the earthiness of the beets.  And the blueberry bonbons are also a very tasty way to end dessert.  Good quality chocolate mixed with blueberries.  You cannot go wrong with this combination.  All the dishes were very good, and I present to you pictures of these dishes for your visual consumption below.  If any of this food or wine sparks your interest, drive out to Abbotsford and buy from these farmers.

I must especially thank winery owner Vern Siemens for opening bottles of every white and red wine I think they make, for us to experiment and pair with all the dishes at our Abbotsford Harvest dinner.  I in particular liked Mt. Lehman’s Pinot Noir and Unoaked Chardonnay, and felt they made good pairings with many dishes.

Vancouver, BC—The Arts Club’s ChefmeetsBCGrape fundraising series returns this September with three entertaining evenings that will feature fine BC wines and delectable cuisine pairings as well as incredible access to world-class winemakers and highly-trained chefs.

These events will be social, lively, and informative, and offer the perfect opportunity to showcase both the flourishing wine industry and innovative fine dining establishments in the province. All proceeds will benefit the Arts Club’s community engagement initiatives and youth-focused education programs.

The series opens with the ChefmeetsBCGrape Signature Tasting, which will feature an extensive selection of BC’s award-winning wines perfectly paired with dishes created by top BC chefs. The events continue with two more intimate evenings: the Uncorked Kitchen Party, a new event dedicated to the prolific Oliver and Osoyoos wine region followed by the decadent Mission Hill Family Estate Dinner. This final event will showcase reserve labels from the flagship Okanagan winery, accompanied by a menu of classic French-inspired cuisine.

Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus.  But does this also work for chefs cooking?  Let’s find out with the husband and wife chef couple from Provence Restaurants.  Details from this match up / throw down are below.

(Vancouver, BC) — On May 23rd Chefs Alessandra and Jean-Francis Quaglia will celebrate 21 years of marriage. Not only are they a couple, but they are also both chefs and business partners owning Provence Restaurants – Provence Mediterranean Grill in Point Grey,Provence Marinaside in Yaletown and the newest venture TWB – The Wine Bar next door to Provence Marinaside. While Jean-Francis is Executive Chef for all locations, he devotes most of his time to Provence Marinaside (P2) while Alessandra casts a watchful eye over Provence Mediterranean Grill (P1). Over the years a friendly rivalry has blossomed between P1 and P2 – each offering slightly different menus and completely different ambiance.
 
On May 29th, Provence Mediterranean Grill will be the site for Husband vs. Wife – a Chef’s Challenge. Who does the better halibut? Alessandra? Jean-Francis? You be the judge.
 
For this one night only P1 will offer a set three-course set menu for $50 (including tax and gratuity but not beverages). The first course is a choice from the restaurant’s antipasti case and dessert is Cherry Chocolate Clafoutis. It’s the main course where the halibut throw down happens. Two very different versions of halibut will be offered – one by the wife, the other by the husband. Guests won’t know who has created which to keep the competition unbiased. At the end of the evening Provence will tally up which main course sold the most and will announce the winner via social media and in its newsletter.
 
The idea came to Alessandra when the family (they have two sons who have grown up in the restaurants) was on a recent vacation. “We had many nights of cooking with the boys and a little competition developed to see who the best cook was. It was a lot of fun, so we decided to try it at the restaurant.”
 
At the moment, this event is planned as a one-off. However, if there is a lot of demand and the event quickly sells out; they may consider repeating it on May 30th and then doing a different competition at Provence Marinaside next month.

Canadian Culinary Federation Culinaire Canadienne Chef’s Conference Is Almost Here!

Have you heard that Vancouver is hosting a national chef’s conference, June 12-15? That is next week! There are opportunities for the public to attend some of these events, and sample the fantastic food created by these chefs.

The Canadian Culinary Federation (CCF) was founded in 1963 and incorporated in Ottawa as a non-profit association in 1972. Since its inception, the federation has enjoyed a deep and long-standing tradition as Canada’s true representation of the professional chef and cook.
