PICA (Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts) highlights BC’s best in new culinary activity

Vancouver, May 9, 2019 – The Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts is excited to announce the debut of The West Coast Culinary Experience; an immersive exploration of British Columbia’s vibrant culinary landscape.
From the ocean to the mountains and Okanagan Valley, British Columbia boasts a rich and diverse terroir that produces a vast selection of regional ingredients. The Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts (PICA) will be highlighting the many flavours of the West Coast in their new culinary activity, The West Coast Culinary Experience is available for bookings now until October 13.
Located at the gateway to Granville Island, one of Canada’s most visited neighbourhoods and home to the iconic Granville Island Public Market, Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts is Vancouver’s leading culinary education center with classes for everyone from aspiring professionals and home chefs alike.
The West Coast Culinary Experience is a deep dive into the flavours of British Columbia and begins with a walking tour of Granville Island. The walking tour weaves through the bustling public market where guests will work up an appetite as they take in the many local artisans and food purveyors from butchers and chocolatiers to bakers and baristas. Tour guides are globally trained chefs, certified sommeliers, food writers, and food experts from PICA, who will answer questions and provide cooking tips, while they point out historical details and reveal hidden, cultural landmarks.
A sommelier-led wine tasting follows the walking tour and features four exceptional BC wines: Mission Hill, Quails Gate, Blue Mountain, and Hester Creek. Guests will experience the province’s different wine regions while learning about grape varieties and what’s new in winemaking during this interactive tasting session.
With thirsts quenched and appetites peaked, up next is a cooking demonstration and tasting. The instructing chef will share best practice for selecting the freshest fish and seafood and demonstrate various cooking techniques. This may include an exploration of traditional recipes from West Coast aboriginal nations or how to clean, filet, and debone a whole salmon. Guests will leave with a better understanding of local seafood and insights on current flavours and cooking styles.
three-course meal at PICA’s Blue Hat Bistro concludes the West Coast Culinary Experience. Guests will have two or three dishes to choose from for each course including vegetarian options.
The West Coast Culinary Experience is an interactive and immersive journey through the traditions, history, and trends of British Columbia’s cuisine. Guests will see, taste, and learn what makes the Vancouver and British Columbia world-class culinary destinations.

“Savio Volpe’s combination of atmosphere, affordability, and a dialed-in but not doctrinaire take on regional Italian has redefined Italian food in Vancouver,” said the judges. April 23, 2019 (Vancouver, BC) – It’s been just over a year since Coquille opened their doors in Gastown and the team have had an incredible year of developing new and existing relationships with shellfish farmers, fishermen and women along with seafood purveyors from near and far.  Seafood Sessions, which will take place every Thursday during happy hour starting on April 25th, is aimed at showcasing the incredible Ocean Wise bounty that Coquille receives on a daily basis.

General Manager, Liam Todd who helped conceptualize the program, says “It’s our way of bringing together and engaging all of our stakeholders; from our restaurant guests, to our kitchen and service teams to our invaluable local suppliers.  It gives us the chance to share the stories behind what’s on our menu.”

Every Thursday will have a different focus and flavour based on the product and the personality of the invited guest or the product being featured with the aim of providing a fun and informal experience to unwind after work or before dinner.

Seafood Sessions will kick off with Malindi Taylor, from Fanny Bay Oysters dropping by the restaurant from 5pm-6pm on April 25th to share some stories about her family’s long history of oyster farming in Puget Sound and share some table-side oyster shucking tips and tricks.  “I’m excited to share some of the Pacific Northwest’s history of shellfish farming directly on your plate.” says Taylor of the weekly program.

May 2nd 4-6PM: Featuring Dungeness Crab with Coquille Sous Chef Matt Marshall and Matt Sherlock, Winemaker at Lock & Worth Winery

Sous Chef Matt Marshall has been crabbing at his family’s cabin on Gambier Island for many a summer and will be sharing the some table-side stories while Matt Sherlock of Lock & Worth Winery located on the Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley will bring his wines and his favourite seafood wine pairing tips.

May 9th 4-6PM: Featuring  Qualicum Scollops with Chef de Cuisine, Chris Jankowski and Jay Drysdale Winemaker at Bella Wines.

Chef Chris will be preparing Qualicum Scallops and telling the comeback tale of this local shellfish that was nearly wiped out in 2013.  Jay Drysdale, an icon in the BC wine industry, will make the trip from his winery in Naramata to share his passion for BC bubbles and make some recommendations for seafood pairings.

You’ve fallen in love with her on YouTube and now the indomitable Michelle Gidard (played by VTS ensemble member Angela Galanopoulos) is coming to the live stage. Starting Monday, May 6th  Vancouver TheatreSports will present Improv Mondays with Michelle – Fake Stories, Real Improvisers hosted by the character Michelle from the popular web comedic soap opera Michelle’s.

The original web series, created by Galanopoulos and fellow VTS ensemble member Andrew Barber, is set in the mythical restaurant Michelle’s in Hope. The VTS show diverges from the original concept as each performance is not necessarily set in Hope – the locations and contents of each story will vary dependent on audience input. What will be consistent is that all will be over-the-top funny with the larger-than-life Michelle in charge. The first half of the show consists of short-form scenarios and the second half of the show will be a mini soap opera – all based on audience contributions. Each scene’s comedic melodrama will be enhanced by live musical underscoring by pianist Matt Grinke.

Plant a treeRocky Mountain Flatbread is on a mission to make a difference with their One Pizza, One Tree for Earth Day commitment.

“We will plant one tree for every pizza bought at our Vancouver locations during the month of April,” says Rocky Mountain Flatbread Owner Suzanne Fielden. “Our goal is to plant at least 6,000 trees in honour of Earth Day!”

“We are partnering with Eden Reforestation Projects, a non profit organization that will hire impoverished villagers at fair wages to plant the trees in a deforested country such as Mozambique,” says Fielden.

Planting new forests is one way to fight climate change while benefiting these vulnerable communities.

Join us and tantalize your taste buds at a selection of restaurants/establishments in the East Village/Hastings Sunrise area of East Van. This evening tasting extravaganza is on Wednesday, March 27 from 6pm until 10pm and is presented by Vancouver Foodster

The restaurants/establishments will be serving up savoury and sweet Tasting Plates for guests to enjoy and you will have a chance to visit many different types of restaurants, bakeries and other establishments throughout the walkable event, partake in a beer and wine tasting and learn about each of the participating spots.

Strathcona Beer Company Launches Releases at Hart House Brewmaster’s Dinner

On Friday, March 22 2019 the Strathcona Beer Company will introduce its spring releases at a Brewmaster’s Dinner hosted by Burnaby’s Hart House Restaurant. The dinner will give guests a chance to taste the new crop of locally made beers paired with outstanding Pacific Northwest cuisine.
Strathcona is all about celebrating the local and homegrown. Based in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood, the brewery creates top-quality craft beer, but it also promotes social development and sees itself as a positive part of a vital community. Strathcona Brewmaster and founding partner Michael “Fezz” Nazarec will be on hand at the dinner to comment on Strathcona’s new releases, which will be paired with a menu designed by Hart House Chef Mike Genest. The evening’s cuisine will emphasize local ingredients that complement the BC craft beers.
