This Tasting Plates Vancouver event was different from all the others, as it was focused on desserts. It is quite a feat too for us attendees, to go from dessert spot to dessert spot. Eventually the sugar catches up to you! There were 8 venues for this event:
- Bella Gelateria
- WE. Coffee
- Beta 5 Chocolates
- Bob Likes Thai Food
- Rocanini Roasters
- The Bibo
- Vancouver Pie Hole
- Trees Organic
Rocanini, WE Coffee, and Trees Organic luckily were also serving their premium coffees, which helped balance off the desserts. I enjoyed a lengthy discussion with the owner at Rocanini as he brewed me a Colombia San Augustin Huila coffee that he custom roasted.
My Favourite Desserts
- Trees Organic Marzipan cheesecake
- Vancouver Pie Hole Key Lime Pie and Bourbon Pecan Pumpkin Pie
- Bella Gelateria Pecan gelato
- Beta 5 Chocolates passionfruit cream puff
I do love chocolate, so I thought there would be at least 1 chocolate dessert, but I also like fruit and nuts, so you see pecans twice, as well as key lime/pumpkin/passionfruit. I guess almonds also figure in with the marzipan.
The Marzipan cheesecake from Trees Organic was not too heavy, sweet, or overly cloying with marzipan flavour. A light touch was applied. Usually I get tired of the marzipan flavour from some desserts, but this one was nice from beginning to end. And it was nice to enjoy with their coffee.
Vancouver Pie Hole really makes some nice pies, and they will also make a gluten free pie for you on special request. The Key Lime was bright and zingy, while the Bourbon Pecan Pumpkin Pie was very rich, and full of flavour. Neither was too sweet either. I like desserts, but not super sweet desserts. I’d like to have a late harvest wine with the Bourbon Pecan Pumpkin Pie, or maybe some port.
Just two doors down from Vancouver Pie Hole is Beta 5 Chocolates, who make exceptional chocolates. But today it was their passionfruit cream puff that earns my accolades. It had so much passionfruit / tropical flavour, which was quite citrusy. It had a light fluffy filling, and again balanced sugar. This was my OVERALL FAVOURITE dessert of the event.
Bella Gelateria provided us with samples of three gelato: chocolate, pecan, and lemon. I liked the grounded, earthy, creamy, nuttiness of the pecan, followed by the bright acidity of the lemon the most.
I hope you have a chance to try some of these desserts. They were all quite wonderful. Enjoy!
Thanks again to Richard aka @vanfoodster for putting on this event.
